The Emergent Metaphysics in Plato's Theory of Disorder.Sarai Robin Charles - 2006 - Lexington Books.
The Emergent Metaphysics in Plato's Theory of Disorder presents for the first time Plato's theory of disorder as it pertains to his understanding of powerful causal forces at work within and outwith the cosmos and the soul of man. Divided into two Parts and presenting passages in both Greek and English, Plato's cosmology, the Timaeus, and his chief theological work, Laws X, are discussed in detail.

  7. Symbolic meanings of prices: Constructing the value of contemporary art in Amsterdam and New York galleries. [REVIEW]Olav Velthuis - 2003 - Theory and Society 32 (2):181-215.
This article develops a sociological analysis of the price mechanism on the market for contemporary art. On the basis of in-depth interviews with art dealers in New York and Amsterdam, I address two pricing norms: one norm inhibits art dealers from decreasing prices; the other induces them to set prices according to size. To account for these pricing norms, I argue that price setting is not just an economic but also a signifying act: despite their impersonal, businesslike connotations, actors on (...)

  10. Off track: art and philosophy as triggers for system change.Sarai van de Boel - 2023 - [Eindhoven]: Lecturis. Edited by Jo Gates.
In "Off Track" art and philosophy are the inspiration to look differently at daily life and organizations. The book is a plea to approach the complexity of the current world with new metaphors. The author calls this "hinking around". She sees that in "square worlds" there is a need for tools to approach entrenched patterns and systems differently and to get thought processes moving. Sarai van de Boel challenges the reader to look at one's own systems from the inside (...)

What is ‘indigenising the academy’ and why attempt it?Te Kawehau Hoskins & Alison Jones - forthcoming - Educational Philosophy and Theory.
We will share some thoughts on what ‘indigenising the academy’ might mean, and why we might attempt it. We come at these questions from our different yet intertwined identities, experiences and lines of intellectual inquiry. Te Kawehau is of Ngāti Hau and Ngāpuhi tribal groups. Her indigenous ancestors arrived in Aotearoa about 1000 years ago. Alison is a Pākehāl her English settler ancestors came as colonists in the 1850s.

Context Matters: Promises and Concerns Regarding Nanotechnologies for Water and Food Applications.Haico te Kulve, Kornelia Konrad, Carla Alvial Palavicino & Bart Walhout - 2013 - NanoEthics 7 (1):17-27.
Expectations in the form of promises and concerns contribute to the sense-making and valuation of emerging nanotechnologies. They add up to what we call ‘de facto assessments’ of novel socio-technical options. We explore how de facto assessments of nanotechnologies differ in the application domains of water and food by examining promises and concerns, and their relations in scientific discourse. We suggest that domain characteristics such as prior experiences with emerging technologies, specific discursive repertoires and user-producer relationships, play a key role (...)

Using the gravitational mixed models to analyze the impact of China's foreign direct investment along with The Belt and Road countries on trade flows.Te-Hsin Hsieh, Ye-Bin Zhu & Kuo-Lung Huang - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Since the “The Belt and Road” initiative was put forward in 2013, China's foreign investment growth rate has been greatly accelerated. In The Belt and Road context, many scholars used models to analyze the relationship between foreign direct investment, trade flows, and import and export trade. From literature reviews, it is found that previous scholars do not conform to reality and cannot be studied dynamically. Therefore, this study used the panel data of China's foreign direct investment and import and export (...)

Constructing Productive Engagement: Pre-engagement Tools for Emerging Technologies.Haico te Kulve & Arie Rip - 2011 - Science and Engineering Ethics 17 (4):699-714.
Engagement with stakeholders and civil society is increasingly important for new scientific and technological developments. Preparation of such engagements sets the stage for engagement activities and thus contributes to their outcomes. Preparation is a demanding task, particularly if the facilitating agent aims for timely engagement related to emerging technologies. Requirements for such preparation include understanding of the emerging science & technology and its dynamics. Multi-level analysis and socio-technical scenarios are two complementary tools for constructing productive engagement. Examination of the emergence (...)

Do Students Learn in My Logic Class.Charles Seibert & Sarai Hedges - 1999 - Teaching Philosophy 22 (2):141-159.
This paper details research which investigated a probable causal connection between taking an introductory logic course and significant improvement in logical skills. The authors first detail the setting (a two-year, open-access unit of the University of Cincinnati), the student body (the authors note that many students enter the college with several notable types of academic disadvantage), and the content of an introductory logic course. Following this, they summarize and defend their research protocol and the results of their study. Findings include (...)

    Signal extraction: experimental evidence.Te Bao & John Duffy - 2020 - Theory and Decision 90 (2):219-232.
We report on an experiment examining whether individuals can solve a simple signal extraction problem of the type found in models with imperfect information. In one treatment, subjects must form point predictions based on observing both public and private signals, while in another they receive the same information but must decide on the weight to attach to each signal, which then determines their point prediction. We find that, at the aggregate level, signal extraction provides a good characterization of subjects’ behavior (...)
